My friend Doug Slaybaugh sent me this verse a few days ago to be an encouragement for what I do to help churches get unstuck.
The verse highlights two very important questions for every person and every organization:
- Where have you come from? – That question helps us get perspective. As we remember the defining moments of where we’ve come from, it helps us define who God has shaped us to be. It also establishes our starting point. We can’t get directions for where we’re going until we know where we’re starting.
- Where are you going? – That question helps us determine our plan for today and tomorrow. As we define our preferred future, we can make wiser decisions about resources and priorities today. Without an answer to this question, we’re left guessing as to how to spend our time, talent and treasure.
Without answering those two questions, it’s impossible to determine what’s important right now? When we don’t have that clarity, we continue to do what we’ve always done. We do what’s comfortable to us. Of course, that means we’ll also get the same results.
