    Quarterly Unstuck Church Report

Getting Things DoneIn preparation for a coaching conversation I had with a business leader last month, I went back and reviewed Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen. This is a classic that every leader really ought to read. Though it’s primarily intended for individuals, the principles Allen rights about are also foundational to what I do to help organizations to get unstuck.

After reviewing the book again, here are some of the highlights that jumped out to me beyond the very practical system Allen offers to help people get things done:

  1. “Thinking in a concentrated manner to define desired outcomes is something few people feel they have to do. But in truth, outcome thinking is one of the most effective means available for making wishes reality.”
  2. “Vision is not enough; it must be combined with venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps; we must step up the stairs.” —Vaclav Havel
  3. “Here are just some of the benefits of asking “why?”: It defines success. It creates decision-making criteria. It aligns resources. It motivates. It clarifies focus. It expands options.”
  4. “People love to win. If you’re not totally clear about the purpose of what you’re doing, you have no chance of winning.”
  5. “It is easier to act yourself into a better way of feeling than to feel yourself into a better way of action.” —O. H. Mowrer
  6. “Maintaining an objective inventory of your work makes it much easier to say no with integrity.”
  7. “Bailing water in a leaky boat diverts energy from rowing the boat.”
  8. “Without a next action, there remains a potentially infinite gap between current reality and what you need to do.”
  9. “I’m in the focus business.” (Me too.)
  10. “A vision without a task is but a dream, a task without a vision is drudgery, a vision and a task is the hope of the world.” —From a church in Sussex, England, ca. 1730

Are you feeling stuck and overwhelmed in your current leadership role? If so, you may want to pick up a copy of Getting Things Done and start turning all those cluttered “to-do list” items in your mind into an actionable plan.
