A fundraiser is easy. You give what someone asks you to give out of emotion, inspiration or pressure. A spiritual journey, on the other hand, is never easy.

The Bible does not mention fundraising at all, which means God never promised He will bless it. At INJOY Stewardship Solutions, we try to stop churches from doing fundraisers and instead take people on spiritual journeys.

What do I mean by that? Your primary objective should be to grow your church spiritually; accelerated generosity and financial blessing are by-products of that happening:

  • When we take time to listen to God and give what He commands rather than what our emotions or personal desires are telling us, we are postured for spiritual growth.

  • When we give because God spoke to us, we open the door to go beyond being simply blessed to experiencing the miraculous — both in the lives of individuals and families, as well as in the life of a church.

Here’s a story that illustrates what I mean:

New Hope Church in Oahu, HI, pastored by Wayne Cordeiro, was running more than 8,000 in weekend attendance. Together, we recently launched a six-week spiritual journey to preclude a time of financial commitments.

In response, 2,170 signed up to receive the daily prayer focus via text messaging. Another 1,548 signed up for a daily devotional email. A whopping 2,115 committed to praying daily. After only 21 days of this congregational activity, I had the privilege to preach at their weekend services.

By the end of that weekend, over 200 people had given their life to Christ for the very first time!

When you begin a financial initiative with a spiritual journey you begin with spiritual wins.

These spiritual wins then lay the foundation for the financial wins.

A spiritual journey assists people in developing prayer and Scripture-reading habits so they can hear God’s voice more clearly in their lives. The principle is simple — spiritual people do daily what unspiritual people do occasionally. Your daily agenda and habits determine how close your individual walk with God is and what results your church corporately gets both spiritually and financially.

You cannot do what God commanded without first taking intentional time to listen to Him.

Also, you cannot do what God commanded without Him noticing and blessing you.

Giving is a heart issue. When you take the time to align your heart with God through a spiritual journey your giving will simply become a by-product of this relationship.  The end result is it will always be enough to meet your church’s needs.

The Challenge of Preaching on Giving

I realize many pastors get uncomfortable when they have to plan a sermon teaching on money or giving. If you start with a focus on the spiritual journey, it gets easier. I’d love to give you a gift I think could help you prepare:

A free sermon outline from the message I shared at New Hope in Oahu at the launch of their capital campaign. I hope it gives you a starting point for taking people on spiritual journey towards hearing God’s voice better and learning to respond generously:
